IELTS Says Goodbye to Pencils: Important Update for Test Takers

    No Pencils In IELTS

A major change has been rolled out in the world of IELTS — and it’s one you definitely don’t want to overlook. As of 2025, the traditional use of pencils in the paper-based IELTS exam has officially come to an end. Test takers must now use black ink pens provided at the test centre.

Let’s break down what this means for you — especially if you're testing in India or Canada.

📅 When and Where Has This Been Implemented?

This policy change is global, but the rollout dates differ by region:

    • India: The new rule came into effect on 22 February 2025.
    • Canada: The policy will be enforced from 1 May 2025.

No matter where you're testing, if you're taking the IELTS on Paper, you must use only the black ink pen provided at the test centre. Personal writing stationery is not allowed.

    🇮🇳 Special Update for India

In India, test takers have already been adapting to this new rule since February 22, 2025. All paper-based IELTS exams now strictly require the use of a black ink pen.

If you’re preparing in India, make sure your practice tests are now done using a pen — not a pencil — to build writing stamina and clarity.

    🇨🇦 Special Update for Canada

In Canada, students received official emails from centres such as Xyna International School, informing them of the update. One such email stated:

"You will not be allowed to enter the test room with any writing stationery. If found with unauthorised stationery, your paper will not be marked, and it will lead to immediate disqualification from the test and a ban from taking IELTS for 5 years."

Canadian test takers uncomfortable with the change can choose to:

    • Transfer to IELTS on Computer for free
    • Request a full refund

Just make sure you contact the centre within 48 hours of receiving the update.

✏️ Since When Was Pencil Part of IELTS?

Pencils have been part of the IELTS exam since its beginning. They were primarily used for:

    • Listening and Reading: Easy to erase and rewrite answers
    • Writing: Clear and erasable for those afraid of making mistakes

The shift to pen usage is being made to enhance answer scanning and marking efficiency, especially with the rise of digital assessment systems.

😬 Not Comfortable with a Pen?

You're not alone — many test takers feel the same way. Here’s what you can do:

    • Start practicing with a black ink pen now, especially for Writing Task 1 and 2.
    • Use lined paper and simulate test conditions.
    • Improve your speed, handwriting, and clarity.
    • If handwriting is a major issue, consider switching to IELTS on Computer, where you can type your responses.

📤 Already Booked IELTS on Paper? Here’s What to Do

If you’ve booked the paper-based test but are now concerned about this change, you have two options (depending on your region and test provider):

    1. Request a free transfer to the computer-based test
    2. Ask for a full refund

👉 You must contact your test provider within 48 hours of receiving the policy update. After that, normal cancellation rules apply.

🧾 What to Bring on Test Day (Paper-Based IELTS)

    Here’s your updated checklist:

✅ Valid photo ID (the same one used during registration)

✅ Nothing else — pens and stationery will be provided at the test centre

🚫 No personal pens, pencils, erasers, or sharpeners allowed

Bringing unauthorized stationery can lead to immediate disqualification and even a 5-year ban from taking IELTS.

    🧐 What’s the Future of Pen-and-Paper IELTS?

This change signals a shift toward more digital-friendly evaluation systems. While IELTS on Paper isn’t going away just yet, the growing popularity of IELTS on Computer could mean a full transition in the next few years.

The focus now is on standardizing the test experience and making evaluation faster, fairer, and more reliable.

💻 Benefits of IELTS on Computer (CD IELTS)

If the switch to pens has you second-guessing your paper test, Computer-Delivered IELTS (CD IELTS) might be the perfect alternative. It offers several advantages that make it an attractive choice for many candidates:

🧠 1. Typing is Easier for Many

If you're more comfortable typing than writing by hand, especially for long tasks like Writing Task 2, CD IELTS lets you type your responses with a full keyboard. You can easily edit, cut, copy, and paste your answers — something not possible on paper.

    ⏱️ 2. Faster Results

CD IELTS typically delivers results within 3–5 days, compared to 13 days for the paper-based test. If you're on a tight schedule for admission or visa purposes, this can make a big difference.

🕒 3. More Test Dates and Flexibility

Computer-delivered IELTS is offered more frequently, even multiple times a week in many locations. This gives you the flexibility to choose a date that suits your preparation timeline.

    👀 4. User-Friendly Interface

The test software is intuitive and easy to use. You can:

    • Highlight text in Reading passages
    • Use copy-paste in Writing
    • Navigate questions easily
    • Adjust volume during Listening

    🏫 5. Fewer Distractions

Smaller group sizes are often used for computer-based tests, creating a quieter, more focused environment compared to the sometimes crowded paper-based sessions.

    ✅ Conclusion

The end of the pencil era in IELTS is here — but it’s not the end of your success story.

Prepare with a pen, adjust your habits, and consider your options if you’re uncomfortable. Stay informed, and don’t hesitate to switch to the computer-based test if that works better for you.

🖋️ It’s time to ink your way to your band score!
