Band 9 Sample Answer:
Some parents believe that assisting their children with homework is beneficial, while others argue that youngsters should complete it independently. I personally support the latter view.
On the one hand, there are clear reasons why some parents choose to help with homework. The most obvious one is that children may struggle to grasp certain concepts, and parental guidance can provide them with much-needed clarity. For instance, a child who is confused about mathematical formulas may gain confidence when a parent explains them in a simpler way. In addition, parental involvement in homework can strengthen family bonds and show children that their education is valued. When parents take an interest in schoolwork, children may feel more motivated and develop positive study habits.
On the other hand, I believe it is more beneficial for children to complete their homework without direct parental help. One key reason is that independent learning fosters problem-solving skills and resilience. If children rely too heavily on parents, they may not learn to think critically or take responsibility for their own learning. Furthermore, teachers assign homework not only to reinforce classroom learning but also to assess a child’s individual progress. If parents intervene too much, the results may not reflect the child’s actual abilities, which could hinder teachers from identifying areas where extra support is needed. Over time, doing homework independently prepares children for future academic and professional challenges, where self-reliance is crucial.
In conclusion, although some parents argue that helping with homework can support learning and motivation, I believe children should be encouraged to do it by themselves. This approach not only promotes independence and responsibility but also ensures a more accurate reflection of their true academic progress.
