Choosing the Right Agency for ECA

When applying for Canadian immigration, obtaining an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is a vital step. The ECA confirms that your foreign education is valid and equivalent to Canadian standards, which affects your eligibility and points under immigration programs such as Express Entry.

Among the many agencies authorized to provide ECAs, the most preferred and widely used are World Education Services (WES) and the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS). Both offer reliable evaluations, but they differ significantly in how they assess certain qualifications, especially for applicants from India.

Most Preferred Agencies: WES and IQAS

·         World Education Services (WES):

WES is a globally recognized credential evaluation agency, widely accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and various Canadian employers and institutions.

·         International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS):

IQAS is operated by the Government of Alberta and provides official evaluations accepted by immigration authorities and provincial programs.

Key Difference: Recognition of Indian Two-Year Postgraduate Degrees

A critical distinction between WES and IQAS lies in their assessment of two-year postgraduate degrees from India:

·         WES does not recognize a two-year postgraduate degree as a full postgraduate qualification.

Instead, WES typically classifies these degrees as Postgraduate Diplomas, which can affect your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score and eligibility.

·         IQAS recognizes a two-year postgraduate degree from India as equivalent to a Canadian postgraduate degree.

This recognition aligns with the official Indian university standards and better reflects the true level of education.

Why This Matters for Your Immigration Application

The way your postgraduate degree is evaluated can influence:

·         Your CRS points under Express Entry

·         Qualification for various Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

·         Recognition by employers and professional licensing bodies in Canada

Therefore, selecting the right ECA agency can make a significant difference in the outcome of your immigration process.
