Band 9 Sample Answer:

While some people are of the opinion that learning a musical instrument is a valuable activity with many advantages, others believe that it is a poor use of time. I side with the former view.

On the one hand, there can be some reasons why some people consider playing an instrument to be unproductive. Firstly, it requires a significant investment of time and effort to become proficient. Many learners spend years practising without ever reaching a professional level, which some might view as inefficient. Secondly, in today's fast-paced world, people are often focused on academic performance or professional skills that lead to measurable success. Playing an instrument may not provide immediate practical benefits, such as income or job opportunities, and is therefore seen as less important. As a result, many consider it more of a hobby than a worthwhile pursuit.

On the other hand, I feel that learning to play an instrument is a highly enriching experience with numerous long-term benefits. Music enhances cognitive abilities, improves concentration, and teaches discipline—skills that are valuable in both academic and professional life. Moreover, it offers emotional and mental health benefits by reducing stress and providing a creative outlet. For example, students who practise music regularly often report better focus and lower anxiety levels. In addition, playing music can foster social connection and teamwork when done in groups or bands, contributing to a well-rounded personality.

In conclusion, although some people believe that playing a musical instrument is a waste of time, I believe it is a rewarding activity that can support personal growth, emotional well-being, and even success in other areas of life.
