Many educational institutions give greater importance to subjects related to science and ignore subjects such as drama and literature.

Why is this? Is this a positive or negative development?

📌 Note: This question appeared in the IELTS PBT Writing exam on 8 May, 2025 in Canada.

It is often argued that science and mathematics should be prioritised over arts subjects like drama and literature. There are several reasons why this viewpoint has gained popularity, and in my opinion, this development brings both benefits and drawbacks.

There are two main reasons why science and maths subjects are seen as more important. Firstly, these fields are directly linked to technological progress and economic development. Nations that invest heavily in science, for instance, are often leaders in innovation, which boosts industries and creates employment. Secondly, in today’s competitive job market, students with backgrounds in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) often have more opportunities. Parents and educators, therefore, push students towards these subjects with the hope of better job security and financial stability.

However, this trend can be viewed as having both positive and negative consequences. On the one hand, prioritising technical subjects ensures that a country builds a skilled workforce, capable of solving complex problems in medicine, engineering, and climate science. This clearly contributes to national progress. On the other hand, neglecting the arts can lead to a society that lacks emotional depth and cultural understanding. Literature and drama, for example, foster empathy, creativity, and critical thinking—qualities essential not just for personal growth, but for a healthy and balanced society.

In conclusion, while science and maths are promoted for practical and professional reasons, I believe this trend has both benefits for innovation and drawbacks for cultural and emotional development.
