Band 9 Sample Answer:

While some people believe that modern technology has allowed individuals to enjoy more leisure time, others argue that it has made people even busier than before. I agree with the latter view.

On the one hand, there are some reasons why people feel technology has created more free time. Firstly, many digital tools are designed to automate time-consuming tasks. For example, appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, and robot vacuum cleaners significantly reduce the amount of time people spend on household chores. Secondly, in the workplace, software applications help employees complete tasks more efficiently. Email filters, scheduling platforms, and data-processing tools can speed up daily operations, allowing workers to finish their tasks earlier and enjoy more personal time. As a result, it is understandable why some believe technology has simplified life and increased convenience.

On the other hand, I feel that modern technology has actually made people busier. In today’s world, employees are expected to be constantly connected through smartphones, messaging apps, and online meeting platforms. This creates pressure to respond immediately, even outside regular working hours, which blurs the boundary between personal and professional life. Moreover, although technology was intended to save time, it has also introduced new distractions. Social media, online shopping, and endless digital entertainment often consume far more time than people realise, making them feel rushed and overwhelmed. Therefore, instead of reducing workload, technology has in many cases extended it by demanding continuous availability and increasing mental fatigue.

In conclusion, although technology can help people complete tasks more quickly, I believe it has ultimately made them busier due to increased expectations, constant connectivity, and digital distractions.
