Band 9 Sample Answer:

It is often argued that handwriting should no longer be taught to children because most of their writing is now done using computers. I completely disagree with this view, as I believe handwriting remains a fundamental skill with cognitive and personal development benefits.

There are two main reasons why I believe handwriting is still essential in a child’s education. Firstly, several studies have shown that writing by hand enhances memory retention and improves learning. When children form letters manually, their brains are more actively engaged compared to when they type. For example, students who take handwritten notes are often better able to recall information than those who rely solely on digital devices. In addition, learning handwriting helps develop fine motor skills and coordination, which are important for early childhood development.

Apart from the cognitive advantages, handwriting plays a significant role in communication and self-expression. Handwritten notes, cards, or letters carry a personal touch that typed messages often lack. Moreover, there are many real-life situations, such as filling out forms, signing documents, or taking written exams, where handwriting remains necessary. If children grow up without learning how to write clearly and legibly, they may face difficulties in both academic and professional settings.

In conclusion, while typing has become more common, handwriting still holds great value and should continue to be taught in schools. It not only strengthens brain development and coordination but also ensures that children are equipped for a wide range of real-world tasks where writing by hand is still required.
